SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Sean O’Sullivan threw five hitless innings and Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-2 Friday night.

O’Sullivan, who had allowed nine hits and four runs in four innings in his previous two outings in relief, retired his first 14 batters before walking Alexei Ramirez in the fifth. That was the only base runner for O’Sullivan.

Gordon, who agreed to a four-year $37.5 million contract before the game, went 2 for 2 with an opposite-field homer off left-hander Eric Stults in the second inning.

Eric Hosmer drove in two runs with a fifth-inning single, increasing his RBI total to a Cactus League-leading 28.

The White Sox scored two unearned runs in the sixth off rookie reliever Kelvin Herrera after a Hosmer throwing error.

Stults took the loss, giving up three runs and five hits and a walk in four innings.
