TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Tony Schumacher raced to the Top Fuel qualifying lead Friday in the NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

Schumacher, the series points leader in the 8,000-horsepower category, had a 3.769-second run at 326.08 mph to top the 16-car field.

“The track was really smooth,” said Schumacher, a two-time winner this season. “My crew took a good look at it and made the decision to go fast. (Crew chief) Mike Green made a great call there under the pressure after being bumped out of the top 12. It was a great run.”

Robert Hight took the Funny Car lead, and Mike Edwards topped the Pro Stock field. Hight powered his Ford Mustang to a 4.067 at 302.62, and series points leader Edwards, also a two-time winner this year, had a 6.618 at 208.55 in a Chevy Camaro.
