Verdasco, Kohlschreiber win in Shanghai

SHANGHAI (AP) — Fernando Verdasco of Spain and Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany reached the second round of the Shanghai Masters with straight-sets victories Sunday.

Verdasco beat Go Soeda of Japan 6-2, 6-4 after converting four of his six break points and hitting six aces, setting up a match against seventh-seeded Juan Monaco.

Kohlschreiber, seeded 16th, used a dominant serve to win 6-4, 6-4 against Ryan Harrison of the United States with one break in each set. He will play either Feliciano Lopez or Alejandro Falla in the second round.

Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray — the top three seeds — have received byes into the second round.
