ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — UNC Asheville says longtime basketball coach Eddie Biedenbach has resigned to take a job on UNC Wilmington’s staff.

Biedenbach said in a statement issued by UNC Asheville on Tuesday that it was difficult to leave the school. But he said he has long felt that if a vacancy ever opened at either UNC Wilmington or North Carolina State, he would have interest in pursuing it.

Biedenbach will be an assistant to UNC Wilmington coach Buzz Peterson.

Biedenbach led UNC Asheville to five Big South regular-season titles, three league tournament championships and three NCAA tournament berths in 17 seasons.

UNC Asheville athletic director Janet Cone says associate head coach Nicholas McDevitt will run the program until Biedenbach’s permanent replacement is hired.
