DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — South American import Winning Prize won in his U.S. debut at Del Mar on Thursday, dominating in a wire-to-wire victory in the $85,000 Del Mar Rotary Club Purse.
The 4-year-old Winning Prize, who had won five of eight career races in his native Argentina, pulled way for a four-length victory over even-money favorite Chips All In, covering a turf mile within a second of the course record at 1:32.10.
Trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale for owners David Heerensperger and Jose Nelson and ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Winning Prize paid $8, $4 and $3. Chips All In returned $2.80 and $2.20, and Rauschenberg paid $7.60 to show.
