RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State turned to Brandon Mitchell as its starting quarterback in the season opener against Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

The school announced shortly before kickoff that the Arkansas graduate transfer would start the first game of coach Dave Doeren’s tenure. He had been competing with Pete Thomas, a junior transfer from Colorado State.

Doeren has said both quarterbacks have good size and can throw well, though Mitchell brings more athleticism to the Wolfpack’s new no-huddle offense.
