PORT ORCHARD — Witnesses say a pickup truck and a car were racing and passing each other at high speeds when the car crashed Monday night near Port Orchard, killing two teenage girls and injuring a third.

The Kitsap County sheriff’s office says the 18-year-old driver and 17-year-old front seat passenger died at the scene of massive injuries after their car went out of control and hit a tree. A 17-year-old rear seat passenger has been taken to Tacoma General Hospital and is expected to survive.

The sheriff’s office says the driver of the pickup truck stopped and tried to help. He’s been jailed for investigation of vehicular homicide.

Investigators say the crash was caused by speed well in excess of the 35 mph posted limit.
