Russian men win cross-country World Cup sprint

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) — Dmitry Japarov teamed with Maxim Vylegzhanin to win the men’s team sprint for Russia at a cross-country skiing World Cup event Sunday.

The team dominated the 6×1.8-kilometer classic-style race from the start and finished in 24 minutes, 12.38 seconds. The Swedish duo of Teodor Petersen and Emil Joensson was second, 18.44 seconds behind. Axel Teichmann and Tobias Angerer of Germany were third.

In the women’s race, the Finnish pair of Mona-Lisa Malvalehto and Anne Kylloenen won the 6×1.25-kilometer classic-style race in 17:06.9. The Russian team of Julia Ivanova and Natalia Matveeva edged Perianne Jones and Daria Gaizova of Canada by .06 seconds to take second.

The next World Cup meet is Feb. 16-17 in Davos, Switzerland.
