Smith, Stephen F. Austin top Nicholls State 63-51

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Taylor Smith scored 17 points as Stephen F. Austin won its fifth straight and 11th in its past 12 games, defeating Southland Conference foe Nicholls State 63-51 Thursday night.

Smith hit 8 of 10 from the field and added six rebounds and four blocks. Desmond Haymon scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range, while Antonio Bostic added 12 points for the Lumberjacks (21-2, 12-1).

Fred Hunter hit 10 free throws in 13 attempts en route to 20 points for the Colonels (6-16, 5-7), and has now scored 20 or more in four straight games.

Nicholls State made just 44.4 percent (16 of 36) from the field and 1 of 8 from 3-point range.

Stephen F. Austin countered by shooting 53.3 percent (24 of 45), including 6 of 12 from 3-point range, and had 15 assists to the Colonels’ eight.
