Freshmen guide High Point over Gardner-Webb 70-64

HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) — Freshman Adam Weary and redshirt-freshman John Brown each scored 15 points to lead High Point in a 70-64 victory over Gardner-Webb Saturday night in a Big South Conference contest.

Weary was 6 of 8 from the floor and 2 for 3 from 3-point range, while Brown hit 5 of 9 plus 5 of 6 at the foul line.

The Panthers (7-8, 2-1) shot 68.4 percent (13 of 19) in the second half as they maintained a 32-27 halftime lead.

Gardner-Webb (9-8, 1-2) led 13-8 after the first 7 minutes, but then the Panthers’ Allan Chaney hit a layup and Weary drained a 3-pointer to spark a 20-3 High Point scoring run.

High Point hit six of its first eight shots in the second half for a 48-34 lead with 12 minutes left. The Panthers led by as many as 15 and maintained the double-digit lead until the final minutes.
