The Hawks scored five quick points to start the overtime period, and made enough free throws from there to pull away for a significant win in the Class 2A Greater St. Helens League.

Monday’s result means Hockinson, Washougal and Mark Morris each have one loss in league play.

Coming off an emotional Thursday win over Mark Morris, Washougal forced overtime on a basket by Mike McElroy as time expired in the fourth quarter.

But Hockinson started overtime with a basket by Jack Klodt followed by a Wyatt Yearout 3-pointer. From there, the Hawks built their lead by converting 7 of 9 free throws. They outscored the Panthers 14-3 in the overtime.

Yearout finished with a game-high 24 points. He made three 3-pointers and five of six free throws, and also pulled down eight rebounds.

Klodt finished with 14 points, and made six of seven foul shots.

Alan Haagen made four steals for the Hawks. Hockinson coach Matt Gruhler said that Jess Krahn’s defensive work off the bench — and five rebounds — helped the Hawks prevail in the back-and-forth contest.

A Nathan Gunderson basket with about 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter put Hockinson ahead 49-47. But, after a Washougal timeout, McElroy came off of a screen and made the tying basket as time expired.

McElroy finished with 15 points for the Panthers. Nate Adams scored 12 points and Aaron Diester added 11.
