Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

TV/radio: KPTV (Ch. 12/712); AM 750

Where they stand: Portland has 6 wins, 1 loss and 8 ties (26 points), and sits third in the West, two points back of first-place FC Dallas; Los Angeles (6-6-2, 20 points) sits fifth in the West.

Head to head: The Galaxy have won four of the five games between the clubs, outscoring the Timbers 12-7. Los Angeles is 3-0 against Portland at home, with a 7-1 goals advantage. This is the first of three MLS meetings between the clubs in 2013. The other two will be in Portland in July and in September.

Timbers’ tale: Portland extended its unbeaten streak in MLS to 13 games with a hard-fought 1-0 win over FC Dallas. The Timbers lead MLS with 25 goals in 15 games, including a league-best 14 in road games. This could be an interesting match. Los Angeles has conceded eight goals in losing its last two matches, but has been scored against only twice in six MLS matches at home this season. Portland will again be without midfielder Rodney Wallace, who is still with the Costa Rica national team. Darlington Nagbe’s goal against Dallas moved him into a tie with Will Johnson atop the Timbers scoring chart, each with five goals on the season. After beating league-leading Dallas, Portland is rated atop the weekly MLSsoccer.com power rankings for the first time. Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts spent three seasons with the Galaxy, including their 2011 MLS Cup season.

Disciplinary note: FC Dallas Jair Benítez was suspended one match for his head butt on Timbers forward Frédéric Piquionne in the 40th minute on Saturday.

L.A. story: Since beating Seattle 4-0 on May 26, Los Angeles has lost three road matches, including a US Open Cup game to a second-division club. They are coming off a 5-0 loss at New England and a 3-1 loss at Real Salt Lake. But the return of Robbie Keane (5 goals, 4 assists) from international duty is a big boost. L.A. is 4-1-1 when Keane plays compared to 2-5-1 when he doesn’t, The acquisition of veteran midfielder Pablo Mastroeni from Colorado strengthens the Galaxy, who also could have defender Todd Dunivant back from injury. Landon Donovan, who has not played for the United States in 2013, is expected to make his 11th appearance this season. The 31-year-old has three goals and three assists on the season.

Landon Donovan on the Timbers: “They’re a very good team. It’s not a fluke. You don’t go that many games without losing by accident.”
