Community notebook: Frank among state lacrosse players of week

Columbia River senior Clayton Frank was among the players recognized by U.S. Lacrosse as one of the Washington players of the week for the first week of the high school season.

Frank, who plays lacrosse for King’s Way Christian, was the offensive player of the week for March 5-12 in the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association’s top division.

Frank had four goals and five assists on March 9, and also picked up five ground balls in the Knights’ season opening win at Curtis.

On Saturday, King’s Way improved to 2-0 on the season with a 7-4 win at Lakeside of Seattle. Connor Dyehouse scored three goals and Evan Ramirez had two goals and two assists. Andrew Legg scored from the defensive end of the field.

King’s Way will play for the first time on its new home field when it faces Eastside Catholic (2-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday at King’s Way Christian High School.

Good start for Camas, Union lacrosse

Camas and Union both started their varsity lacrosse history by beating visiting Selah.

On Wednesday, the first-year members of the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association will face each other in a match at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Last Friday, Camas beat Selah 15-3 at Doc Harris Stadium. Austin Garwood had four goals, two assists and three ground balls for the Papermakers. Bryce Tabbut had four goals, one assist and fielded six ground balls.

On Saturday at Pacific Middle School, Union beat Selah 11-2. Gunnar Drell and Ben Morasch scored three goals apiece for the Titans. Chase Fenn collected 13 ground balls.

ELC girls lose season opener

The Evergreen Lacrosse Club opened the high school girls lacrosse season on Saturday with a 16-8 loss to Kennedy of Burien at McKenzie Stadium.

Madeline McKinnon paced Evergreen with four goals.ELC next plays at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma. On Saturday at 2 p.m., the Black Cats host perennial state power Bellevue at 2 p.m. at McKenzie Stadium. Admission is free.

Swimmer places 4th at top-flight meet

Julia Sanders of Columbia River Swim Team reached the podium with a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle during a Speedo Champions Series meet at Federal Way.

Sanders swam a personal-best time of 23.14 seconds to reach the podium.

Sanders was one of nine members of the Vancouver-based CRST club to participate in the meet. The meet, which participants had to qualify for, drew swimmers from around the Western United States, including Olympic gold medal winner Missy Franklin.

Sanders swam in five events during the five-day meet at the King County Aquatic Center. Other CRST swimmers who participated in the meet were Andrea Young, Darya Samiee, Anna Panebianco, Kasey Calwell, Eric Bugna, Chris Xue and John Utas. For their results, see the Community Sports Scoreboard.

Liberty M.S. girls win basketball title

Going undefeated for the first time in school history, the Liberty Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team won the Greater St. Helens Middle School League championship.

The Lions won all 12 of their games. They twice came from behind in the second half to defeat Shahala, including in the district tournament championship game. The school opened in 2006. This was the seventh season of basketball for the Lions.

“We couldn’t have been undefeated if everyone didn’t work hard at every practice and game,” Liberty coach Jamie Moore said.

Players for the Lions were: Julia Coombs, Brynn Jackson, Emma Jones, Karis Whorton, Ellie Echeverio, Alyssa Tomasini, Emma Ware, Megan Chow, Raven Reynolds, Elise Anhorn, Stephanie Knight and Teague Schroeder.

Prairie wins in prep rugby

The Prairie Wolf Pack posted their first win of the Oregon Youth Rugby high school season on on Saturday beating West Linn 22-0. Ronnie Evenden, Cody Flores, Tyler Duncan scored tries, as did freshman Dallas Goodpastor, who scored on a strong run in his first match.

Yousef Kitali, Garret Loghry and Hayden Perrins also had strong games according to coach John Fletcher.

Prairie hosts Newberg at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Laurin Middle School.

Reynolds beat the Battle Ground Bulls 42-7 on Saturday.

Brandon Paprska scored the Bulls’ try, and Battle Ground’s man of the match according to coach Daniel Simental was Verno Boespflug.

Simental said his team played better rugby than it did in its season opener, a win over Canby.

Results were not reported from matches for the Clark County team in the boys second division and for the Battle Ground girls rugby team.

Timbers Academy U16s shut out Irvine squad

Defender Peter Prescott of Vancouver scored his third goal in two games as the Portland Timbers Academy under-16 team posted a 2-0 win over Strikers FC of Irvine, Calif., on Saturday in Beaverton.

On Sunday, midfielder Jacob Kempf of Camas scored the goal for the Timbers U-16s in a 1-1 draw with Pateadores of Costa Mesa, Calif.

Midfielders Foster Langsdorf of Vancouver and James Nosack of Ridgefield were among four members of the Timbers Academy U-18s who were called up for the MLS Reserve League match between the Timbers and Sounders, though neither saw action in Portland’s 1-0 win on Sunday in Tukwila.
