A Rochester man was killed Monday morning in a logging accident near Cougar.

Kyle M. Schlesser, 28, died when he was struck by a falling tree, according to the Cowlitz County sheriff’s office.

The news release reported that first responders were dispatched at about 9 a.m. after Schlesser was struck by a tree two miles west of Cougar.

According to deputies, Owen Fickett, 43, of Onalaska, felled a tree that hit a second tree, which in turn struck Schlesser.

Schlesser was cutting another tree at the time; Fickett said that he called out to warn Schlesser before downing the tree.

Fickett told deputies that he had 23 years of logging experience without ever injuring himself or others. Schlesser had nine years of logging experience, according to the report.

The victim’s father, James Schlesser, owns the logging company.
