Letter: Let Herrera Beutler fulfill both roles

The Columbian
Published: November 6, 2013, 4:00pm

I’m highly skeptical of the calls from “concerned” citizens that U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, needs to resign because she gave birth to a premature baby. Are they concerned she’s not doing her work? Herrera Beutler was ready to vote on the possible invasion into Syria, she voted to reopen the government and avoid default, and has continued fighting for accountability on the Columbia River Crossing.

That leaves only two real motivations. They are partisan activists who only want to elect Democrats, or they don’t think women should be allowed to have children while holding powerful positions. Telling the mother of a newborn baby she doesn’t deserve to be in Congress will make sure the “old male” contingent maintain its monopoly in Washington, D.C. Personally, I think putting more women and mothers in power would restore some civility to Congress. Maybe then they would actually get some things done.
