State Rep. Liz Pike, R-Camas, stated that construction projects using prevailing wages need to have exemptions or be lowered. She proposes a sub-minimum wage for those 21 and under, a “training wage,” which would be below living standards and keep youth in poverty. The current Washington state minimum wage doesn’t even scratch the surface. A movement in the Seattle area is attempting to raise the minimum to $15 an hour.
Clark County Commissioner David Madore opposed the Columbia River Crossing, which would have provided living-wage jobs and reduced traffic congestion between Portland and Clark County. The air pollution density is reaching unhealthy levels. Traffic congestion on both Interstate 5 and Interstate 205 is getting worse. Action needs to be addressed, not reactionary rhetoric, to help solve this serious problem.
