The last time the Oregon State men’s basketball team made the NCAA Tournament, the Beavers had a guy named Gary Payton on the roster.

So what did OSU coach Craig Robinson do in an effort to get the Beavers back to the Big Dance? He added a guy named Gary Payton.

Gary Payton II, son of the OSU legend and Hall of Famer, has committed to join the Beavers.

The younger Payton, known as “The Mitten,” is a 6-foot-3, 175-pound sophomore guard at Salt Lake Community College.

It’s a good move, but Robinson might also want to see if Teo Alibegovic Jr. is available.

Instant replay sharpened in focus for the 2014 season Thursday as Major League Baseball’s owners voted to move forward with a proposed system that features manager challenges and a remote video center located in New York.

Now commissioner Bud Selig needs the approval of both the umpires’ union and Players Association to implement the changes for the upcoming season.

“Unless there’s something I’m missing right now,” Selig said, “we’re going to have replay in 2014.”

Well, let’s check the replay to be sure.

Alex Rodriguez’s scheduled investigatory interview with Major League Baseball was called off because the Yankees third baseman was feeling ill.

A-Rod was suspended for 211 games by MLB in August for alleged violations of the sport’s drug agreement and labor contract, and the players’ association filed a grievance to overturn the penalty.

But the appeal process will be delayed a bit because Rodriguez is in California with flu-like symptoms and was unable to fly to New York.

Gee whiz, we sure hope A-Rod can find the proper medication to make himself feel better.
