LONDON (AP) — Richard Hannon, one of British horse racing’s most colorful trainers whose owners include Queen Elizabeth II, will retire at the end of year and hand over duties to his son.
Hannon announced the decision on his website, saying he would hand over his license to his son Richard Jr. on Jan. 1, 2014.
The 68-year-old Hannon was crowned champion trainer three times in the last four years and has several major victories, including three in the 2,000 Guineas with Mon Fils, Don’t Forget Me and Tirol.
Hannon also won the 1,000 Guineas last season with Sky Lantern.
Hannon, who began training in 1970 after his father’s retirement, says he “will still be up and out at first lot and assisting Richard instead of him assisting me.”
