SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Hamilton Island Yacht Club says it has hired long-time skipper and executive Iain Murray to head Team Australia’s challenge for the 35th America’s Cup.

Murray most recently was regatta director of the 34th America’s Cup in San Francisco, which ended with Oracle Team USA rallying to beat Emirates Team New Zealand in one of the greatest comebacks in sports.

Hamilton Island Yacht Club is the challenger of record for the 35th America’s Cup, meaning it will help negotiate rules for the next regatta.

Murray competed in three America’s Cups. He was the losing skipper in 1987, when Dennis Conner swept Kookaburra III to regain the America’s Cup for the United States after losing it to Australia four years earlier.

The 35th America’s Cup probably will be in 2017.
