Authorities identified a body found in the Columbia River last week as a 25-year-old Vancouver man.

Nicholas J. Melum went under the water and did not surface Sunday evening, Sept. 1, at the Vancouver Landing dock near the Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay. His body was found three days later, floating near the dock.

The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be an accidental drowning.

Melum was reportedly swimming near the dock Sunday when he called for help and went under. Nearby teens jumped in and threw him a life ring, but were not able to rescue him.
