Cascade Highlands — The latest neighborhood newsletter reports “a big uptick in the number of mail theft incidents in our area — not just Cascade Highlands, but in neighborhoods immediately around us.”

What can you do about mail theft, an ongoing problem that usually occurs without witnesses? It’s a tough one. The neighborhood newsletter recommends “cluster” mailboxes, but the U.S. Postal Service has said these are just as convenient for thieves (even when locked) as they are for mail carriers. The best way to safeguard your mail is to collect it immediately and never to leave outgoing mail in your box. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service urges folks to report mail and mailbox thefts, because neighborhood crime trends can be detected and law enforcement can zero in on specific areas.
