Maintenance work on the Interstate 5 Bridge will cause occasional lifts on the northbound span Thursday, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Crews will grease the trunnion bearings on the northbound side of the bridge, which is the older of the twin spans carrying I-5 across the Columbia River. Resulting drawbridge lifts will stop northbound traffic for up to 20 minutes at a time, according to ODOT.

The lifts will begin at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, the agency said. They’ll wrap up by 2 p.m., before the bulk of the afternoon commute back to Vancouver.

Motorists can use Interstate 205 as a detour to get from Portland to Vancouver. Lifts on I-5 will also periodically close the span to bicycles and pedestrians.
