WALLA WALLA — Students at Whitman College are planning to protest the private school’s continued investment in fossil-fuel producing companies, despite the college’s refusal to explore divestment.

Organizers plan a protest on Wednesday afternoon at Whitman’s Memorial Building.

The Walla Walla Union-Bulletin says Divest Whitman is organized by the Walla Walla college’s chapter of the group Campus Climate Challenge. The nationwide divestment movement, seeks to push colleges to pull their investments in businesses that have large fossil-fuel reserves.

The Associated Students of Whitman College last year asked the college’s Board of Trustees to examine the effects of divesting from fossil-fuel producing companies on its endowment. But in February the board announced it would not move forward with divestment.
