Washougal — The Swashbucklers team didn’t win any doubloons, but they did receive plenty of accolades for winning Washougal School District’s first district-wide Battle of the Books this month.

Nearly 100 fourth- and fifth-graders competed by reading books and then answering quizzes based on their knowledge.

Cape Horn-Skye Elementary was represented by both teams that made it to the final “Grand Battle” on April 14 at Washougal High School.

The theme of the competition was “Books are Treasure,” which inspired many of the kids to wear pirate costumes. Washougal High School Librarian Hillary Marshall led efforts to put together the event.
