The man critically injured last week in a two-alarm fire at his Orchards-area home has died, according to the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office.

George E. Henderson, 75, died Friday evening at the Legacy Oregon Burn Center on the Legacy Emanuel campus in Portland.

Firefighters were dispatched at 4:53 a.m. Wednesday to Henderson’s home to find it in flames, with reports of a man still inside. They went inside and lifted Henderson out through a window of the single-story house.

Henderson was transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in critical condition and later taken to the burn center.

Henderson’s death is being investigated by the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office. The fire appears to have started in a food smoker on the patio, fire officials said.

The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damages to Henderson’s home, at 7610 N.E. 142 Ave. in the Sifton neighborhood. The fire also spread to a neighbor’s house, causing an estimated $75,000 in damages to that home.

The fires were extinguished in about 30 to 40 minutes.
