Weather Eye: Chilly east winds not finished yet

Baby, it’s cold outside! Lyrics from a seasonal tune and befitting to the beginning of the winter season. Highs Monday remained in the 30s in most areas of the county unless you were away from the influence of those cold easterly winds.

Vancouver only struggled to 37 degrees for a high after a chilly 26 degrees in the early morning hours for the low temperature. Clouds appeared just before sunrise, bringing that looming threat of icy precipitation, but we escaped that event, thankfully.

We are actually between the warm southerly jet stream and the colder northern jet stream. High pressure will rebuild east of the Cascades and strong east winds will blow once again tonight and Wednesday as more energy from the southerly branch gets near and keeps the offshore flow going.

Rainfall Monday remained in the southern Willamette Valley, where some freezing rain was reported in Eugene, Ore., and several inches of snow fell in south-central Oregon. Despite the chilly temperatures I don’t foresee any snow or ice in our local area for at least the next week and maybe longer at this point.

The snowpack in the Cascades is getting off to a rough start with a familiar pattern of snow, rain, snow rain, etc. Hopefully that will change soon and get into the normal winter fashion. We shall see some showers later this week and temperature climbing back to seasonal averages. The normal high is 49 degrees and the low 37 degrees.

November rainfall amounts are coming in from your friends and neighbors around the county, which I will share in the near future. Vancouver officially ended up with just 2.92 inches, 2.99 inches below average. The year-to-date rainfall is 32.39 inches, .18 of an inch below average. Last year through November we had 25.78 inches.

We had quite an extreme in temperatures last month, ranging from a high of 63 degrees and a low of 19 degrees. The average mean temperature was 45 degrees, 1.4 degrees below average.

Enjoy your week and keep warm!
