Western Illinois beats Nebraska-Omaha 79-72 in OT

MACOMB, Ill. (AP) — Garrett Covington scored 17 points Saturday night, including six free throws in overtime, and Western Illinois rallied to beat Nebraska-Omaha 79-69 in their Summit League opener.

Tate Stensgaard scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Jabari Sandifer added 11 points for the Leathernecks (7-9, 1-0).

The lead changed hands six times in the first half and Omaha (10-6, 0-1) led 20-19 at halftime. The Mavericks led 61-59 with 11 seconds to play in regulation when Remy Roberts-Burnett hit a jumper to tie it at 61.

The Leathernecks scored six quick points in overtime, and then sank 10 free throws to lead 79-67 with 8 seconds to play. Devin Patterson scored a layup and 3-pointer and time expired.

Western Illinois outshot Omaha 48.2 percent to 38.8 percent and outrebounded them 44-32.

John Karhoff scored 25 for Omaha, Marcus Tyus scored 15, and Patterson finished with 10.
