Weather Eye: Despite the hype, wind and showers were no big deal

Just another day in the neighborhood Saturday, with showers and blustery winds. Typical January weather, I’d say.

The “big storm” that was forecast to swing in Friday night and Saturday was way overblown by the news media once again. Heavy rain failed to develop locally and Friday was a masterpiece of an evening, with temperatures in the mid-50s, a warm southerly breeze and no rain.

Overnight, a band of moderate rain (generally less than 1/2 inch everywhere) and gusty winds from 25 to 45 mph bellowed outside our windows as we slept. Saturday was cooler and blustery as scattered showers moved through. Nothing unusual for a winter day. The only thing I can say to excuse the overemphasis on this storm was that it was the windiest in about a year and the stormiest since late September, when we had a number of big rainstorms. And, of course, our weather scene has been very quiet for several months.

Speaking of quiet, as Monday moves along the rain chances decrease and we go into a week of foggy nights and maybe some clearing in the afternoons. Highs in the 40s and lows in the 30s. Inversion-type weather. You know the drill by now.

December rainfall reports from your friends and neighbors:

I had 2.21 inches here in Salmon Creek; Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 5.54 inches; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 3.43 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 1.93 inches; Bob Starr, Cougar, 7.58 inches; Phil Delany, Dole Valley, 10.30 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lakeshore, 1.54 inches; Pete Conrad near Tukes Mountain, 3.27 inches.

Dave Campbell, one mile west of Heisson, 4.35 inches; Tyler Mode from his Minnehaha station, 2.02 inches; Barry Fitzthum, Amboy, 5.85 inches; Larry Lebsack, Barberton area, 2.83 inches; Tom Dixon, Amboy 6.93 inches; Chuck Houghten, Hockinson Heights, 6.21 inches; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 3.10 inches.

Bill Sobolewski, Livingston Mountain, 5.97 inches; Matt Sloan, Heights/South Cliff neighborhood, 2.28 inches; Murphy Dennis, near Rawson Road near Clark Rifles, 5.63 inches; Merle Moore, Yacolt, 8.09 inches; Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 2.96 inches; and Dan Hein, Camas, 4.62 inches.

Enjoy your week as we head back into the doldrums of winter!
