NC Central knocks off Bethune-Cookman 64-49

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Jay Copeland scored 16 points and Alfonzo Houston had 15 to lead North Carolina Central to a 64-49 victory over Bethune-Cookman Monday night.

Copeland also pulled down 10 rebounds for NCCU (9-5, 1-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Reggie Groves scored 10 points and Emanuel Chapman had eight assists.

Bethune-Cookman (2-17, 0-4) has now lost 15 consecutive games.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead and held a 16-10 advantage at the 8:12 mark of the first half. They extended that to 35-23 at the half. NCCU surged to a 51-29 advantage with 12:31 remaining in the game.

NCCU’s defense stymied the Wildcats throughout, limiting them to 29.2 percent from the field in the second half.

Clemmye Owens led the Bethune-Cookman with 14 points after making 4 of 8 3-pointers. The Wildcats turned the ball over 20 times.
