Hot Heir Skier wins Big A’s Winkfield Stakes

NEW YORK (AP) — Hot Heir Skier beat Oliver Zip by a half-length on Monday in the $100,000 Jimmy Winkfield Stakes for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct.

Never worse than third at any point, Hot Heir Skier seized the lead from the pacesetting Oliver Zip in midstretch for his second win in three starts. Jose Ortiz was the jockey for trainer Ben Perkins, Jr. The time was 1:11.25 for the six furlongs.

Hot Heir Skier paid $7.50, $3.70 and $2.80. Oliver Zip, the 2-1 favorite, returned $3.20 and $2.40. Charleymillionaire made a late run to get third, paying $3.20.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day feature is named for the Hall of Fame jockey, who was the most recent African-American to win the Kentucky Derby in 1902 on Alan-a-Dale.
