According to reports out of Canada, Jamie Kompon will be introduced Wednesday as the new general manager and head coach of the Portland Winterhawks.

The Winterhawks have scheduled a press conference for 2 p.m. Wednesday to introduce the person who will replace Mike Johnston.

Johnston recently was hired as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins after six seasons in charge of the Winterhawks.

Kompon, 47, has been an assistant coach in the National Hockey League for 16 seasons, including for two recent Stanley Cup champions — the 2012 Los Angeles Kings and the 2013 Chicago Blackhawks.

He started his coaching career at McGill University of Montreal as an assistant and later co-head coach. He played college hockey at McGill and played professionally in the East Coast Hockey League and in the German Elite League.

He started his NHL coaching career in 1997 as a video coach with the St. Louis Blues. He was promoted to an assistant coach post in St. Louis, before moving to Los Angeles as an assistant coach.

Two of Kompon’s six seasons in Los Angeles overlapped with Johnston’s time as a Kings’ assistant coach.
