SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Salem police say a Polk County sheriff’s sergeant died in a traffic crash on state Highway 22.

The Statesman Journal reported that Salem officers responding to a single vehicle crash Friday afternoon found the victim was 48-year-old Randy W. Whittaker of Dallas, Ore.

Police said Whittaker was eastbound in the right lane when another vehicle passed. They said he moved into the left lane, lost control of his vehicle and struck the cement barriers along the side of the highway.

A dog that ran from the vehicle after the crash was found and was being returned to the family.
