Letter: Charter restricts initiative power

The ads in favor of the home rule charter tell us that it gives us the initiative process. Read the charter. Section 7.1a, 1 through 6, puts forth things that cannot be addressed with the initiative. Number 6 under “Initiative Restrictions” reads “Amending or repealing this charter.” I cruised other charters in the state and could not find this same restriction. Quite the contrary, some list the initiative as one method of making amendments to their charter.

Read the entire charter. Either love it or leave it. I’m leaving it.
