The condition of a 17-year-old Vancouver boy struck by a car while walking in Hazel Dell last month has improved.

Chase Pickens was in critical condition when he first arrived at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. He was walking on the sidewalk near Columbia River High School around 6:20 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 31 when he was struck by a Mazda, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said.

Chancellor Pruett, 18, of Vancouver, was driving the Mazda west on Northwest 99th Street when he used a right-turn-only lane to pass a vehicle, cut back into the westbound lane and crashed into an eastbound 1997 Silver BMW that was turning left into a driveway, according to the sheriff’s office.

After the cars collided, the Mazda crashed into Pickens, a junior at Skyview High School. He’s been in the hospital ever since, and was recently moved out of the intensive care unit.

A donation account to help cover medical expenses was set up for Pickens at OnPoint Community Credit Union. People can stop by any branch to donate. His father, Craig Pickens, also set up an online donation account through GoFundMe.
