A decomposing body was found Wednesday afternoon at a former rest area next to the Interstate 5 exit ramp to Fourth Plain Boulevard in Vancouver.

Investigators with the Washington State Patrol’s local criminal investigation division responded around 1:45 p.m. to the site, which was described as a transient camp. They had difficulty identifying the person and weren’t sure of the gender, Trooper Will Finn said.

“It had been out there for some time,” he said, adding that a transient found the body and called 911.

The former rest area is next to baseball and softball fields used by Clark College. Motorists can’t access the area, which is blocked off by concrete barriers, Finn said.
