Prep highlights: Union beats Battle Ground 2-1 in softball

Alexis, Anna, and Alexis all earned A’s on the softball field Wednesday for the Union Titans, and now there is a three-way tie in the loss column in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League.

Alexis Staton hit a two-out, run-scoring single to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, then Anna Aguon won it with a base hit, giving the Titans a 2-1 victory over Battle Ground.

Alexis Kron gave up one run to get the win from the pitching circle.

Meanwhile, Camas got a win over Mountain View, putting the Papermakers at 6-2 in the GSHL. Union and Battle Ground are each at 5-2.

“All I’m thinking is what I can do for my team and where the ball needs to go,” said Staton. “It just felt good. It felt right. I haven’t had a hit like that in a while.”

Aguon then stepped to the plate. She echoed Staton’s philosophy, just trying to make something happen for all the Titans.

“We win as a team, not individually,” she said.

Both players credited pinch hitter Hannah Prather for getting the rally started with a lead-off single. Amanda Lail followed with a bunt single. Two outs followed, leaving it up to Staton and Aguon.

Parker Boyd struck out six and got the tough-luck loss for Battle Ground. Alexis Morrison drove in the Tigers run with a single in the sixth inning.

Battle Ground, Camas, and Union are battling not only for a league title but also one of the top two seeds for the district tournament — the top two receive a first-round bye.

“It’s really important to keep our heads in it,” Staton said. “Make sure we don’t get the No. 1 or No. 2 spot in our heads.”

“Don’t let our guard down,” Aguon added.

After all, the 4A GSHL softball race is too close to call.

Stars of the day

• Connor Belvin, Columbia River baseball, went 4 for 4 and drove in six runs in a win over Fort.

• David Wallum, Hudson’s Bay baseball, struck out five and got the win over Mark Morris, keeping the Eagles in second place in the 2A GSHL.

• Katie Schroeder and Alexis Tiedy, Camas softball: Schroeder struck out 12 and also hit a home run, and Tiedy had the game-winning RBI in a nine-inning win over Mountain View.

• Colin Biggs, Mountain View baseball, struck out 10 over seven shutout innings to lead the Thunder to a 1-0 win over Battle Ground.

• Kayley Johnson, Heritage softball, went 2 for 2 with an RBI in Heritage’s 5-2 win over Evergreen.

• Mitch Lines, Hockinson baseball, struck out 14 and went 1 for 3 in the Hawks’ 4-2 win over Ridgefield.

• Brody Barnum, Skyview baseball, went 1 for 3 with two RBI as Skyview beat Evergreen 5-2.

• Kari Staples, King’s Way Christian girls track and field, won the 100 and 400 in a meet in White Salmon.

• Philipp Tistov, La Center boys track and field, won the 100, 200 and 400 meters as La Center won a four-team meet at Stevenson.
