In his Aug. 5 letter “Supreme Court fails on moral issue,” Stephen Franklin White bemoans the idea that “later immigrants are imposing their cultural standards and misinterpreting the Constitution.” He’s mad at the decision to legalize same-sex marriage and is complaining that this was done because the court is made up of “Jews and Catholics” (his words, not mine).
What the heck is a later immigrant, anyway? My grandfather came from Sweden in the early 1900s. Nobody in my family ever spewed or encouraged this type of hate and intolerance. This kind of judgment is best left for God and not us mortals’ narrow view of the world.
The founders of this country wanted the majority to rule. Maybe that was their mistake if the hope was that we would never progress, but in my view it’s a great idea. And what our majority wants these days is acceptance and understanding. Heterosexuals have screwed up the institution of marriage, I say we let someone else see if they can do better.
Before anyone wonders about my credentials, I’m working on my 35th year of my only marriage to the love of my life, a woman. I will stack my morals against anyone’s, but I refuse to believe that I know best and that those who don’t agree with me don’t pass muster. I feel that it’s a more rewarding, and probably a more Christian, way to live.
