A man wearing an improvised cardboard mask robbed a Subway restaurant in the Orchards area Tuesday night and ran off with more than $100 in cash, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

The robbery was reported at about 7:20 p.m. at the restaurant, 5620 N.E. Gher Road. The suspect reached into his pocket, implied he had a weapon and demanded money, Vancouver police Sgt. Mike Chylack said. Two young women were working at the time of the robbery, but no customers were in the restaurant, Chylack said.

After getting about $120 from the till, the suspect ran east across Gher Road and through the Sportsman’s Warehouse parking lot, Chylack said. Police used a K-9 to search the area but couldn’t find him.

The suspect was described as 5-foot-6 with a thin build, likely in his late 20s or early 30s. During the robbery, he wore a dark-colored hoodie and baggy pants. He tucked a makeshift mask made from brown cardboard into his hood to cover his face, Chylack said.

The robbery remains under investigation. Chylack said police will review surveillance footage, and they are trying to determine whether Tuesday’s robbery is connected to another Subway robbery that occurred last week in Hazel Dell.
