Letter: Organize allotted firing zones

It’s no surprise to people who know me that I’m a libertarian-minded guy. As in, you do your thing and don’t bother me, and I’ll do my thing and not bother you, and we’ll get along fine — a simple golden rule. But the neighborhood fireworks are simply out of hand. They start early, and go far past the legal hours. If it was only annoying, I could live through it, but it goes deeper than that.

First, there’s the fire danger, and it’s not trivial this year. There were many grass and structure fires in Vancouver due to fireworks. I also spend each morning picking bits of filth out of my lawn and off the roof.

Then there’s the stress it puts on some people and some pets. I have two dogs that we medicate so they can make it through the evening. How would any of you like it if you had to medicate a family member so I could have fun? That’s not very considerate when you think about it.

I’d like to see the city and county have approved “shooting zones” where people could go to set off their fireworks. Pick places far enough away that you could set off a mortar and it wouldn’t bother anyone. Have a fire truck there just in case things got out of hand. This seems a reasonable answer to me.
