Letter: Embrace diversity

The Columbian
Published: June 5, 2015, 12:00am

The great United States of America is being brought down by our political system and intolerant ideologies. Americans have been lied to by all our politicians when it comes to their agendas. The recent accusations against former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who is now a lobbyist, should give us concern. I am sure we will get an apology, and it will be business as usual. There have been many politicians who should have resigned after scandals, but are still getting a paycheck from you and me. When people are rewarded for their improprieties, whether starting a war or sexual misconduct, we, the people, lose.

Intolerance is another weakness of our country, especially since we are a nation of immigrants who stole land from an indigenous people. In today’s world, any country is within an air flight’s cost, therefore, we should be embracing diversity.

There are also the intolerant, crazy radicals. These people can be found everywhere because of poor education, economics or religious reasons. The Muhammad drawing idea is ignorant and will cause more problems. Are we, as a people, really intolerant or are we being hijacked? Can we have a Jesus Christ on the cross drawing contest?
