A 16-year-old boy died in the hospital after he reportedly jumped off an overpass onto the shoulder of Interstate 205 on Monday morning in Vancouver.

Multiple callers to 911 reported seeing the incident, which took place about 11:15 a.m. He jumped from the Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard overpass onto the southbound I-205 shoulder, according to emergency radio traffic.

Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said the teenager was alive and rushed to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. He went into surgery but did not survive, Kapp said.

Emergency workers temporarily blocked the right and center southbound lanes of traffic, but all lanes were reopened by noon. Vancouver police are investigating the incident as an apparent suicide, Kapp said.

The teenager was a student in the Evergreen Public Schools district, Kapp said. Grief counselors are available for students at school today or as long as needed, said Gail Spolar, spokeswoman for the district.
