Vancouver Public Schools’ event in August to provide backpacks, school supplies, shoes and haircuts to students before the school year began has been recognized by the National School Boards Association.

The district’s Go Ready! Back to School Readiness Festival has been named one of five first-place winners of The American School Board Journal’s Magna Award for school districts with more than 20,000 students.

The inaugural festival, organized by the district’s Family-Community Resource Center and community partners, was designed to help families prepare for the school year. Go Ready! helped more than 2,100 district families and introduced the programs and services offered at the 13 school-based resource centers.

A description of the Go Ready! event will appear in the April edition of American School Board Journal, which is published by the National School Boards Association. The district will be recognized on March 21 in Nashville, Tenn., during the association’s annual conference.
