A fire in a cabinet shop in rural La Center caused more than $120,000 in damage by the time it was extinguished Sunday morning.

Firefighters from Clark County Fire District 10 and Clark County Fire & Rescue were dispatched at about 7 a.m. Sunday to the shop, in the 34000 block of Northeast 91st Avenue. When crews arrived, it became clear that the shop’s owner had put most of the fire out, but there was still smoke streaming from the building’s doors, windows and vents, said Fire District 10 Battalion Chief Gordon Brooks in a news release.

“If I had to make a guess, the fire most likely started late in the night, and died out due to lack of oxygen,” Brooks said. “The owner is extremely lucky that it didn’t erupt in an explosion when the door was opened and fresh air was introduced.”

Two fire engines and a water tender vehicle from Fire District 10, along with one engine from Fire & Rescue’s La Center station stayed on scene for about an hour and a half to extinguish flames in a stack of cabinet materials and in a wall of the structure.

The Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. The flames caused an estimated $20,000 in damage to the 4,000-square-foot shop and more than $100,000 in damage to tools and other materials in the building, Brooks said.

Nobody was injured, he said.
