Prep roundup: Mountain View soccer goes distance for win

Mountain View distanced itself from Columbia River in a Monday non-league boys soccer match with three goals from senior Will Warne.

And all three were from quite a distance.

The Thunder central defender scored on three direct free kicks from the Mountain View half of the field in a 5-3 win over the Chieftains at Jason Lee Middle School. The three free kicks ranged in distance from 60 to 75 yards according to Mountain View coach Jeff Brooks.

“Will’s got a pretty strong leg. Anytime we have a free kick from our own half he takes it,” Brooks said.

The goals all came in the first half and gave Mountain View a 4-1 lead.

Warne actually put a fourth free kick into the goal, but it did not count because it was an indirect free kick, meaning another player had to touch the ball to make it a legal goal.

Stars of the day

• Max Hauser, Ridgefield boys soccer, scored three goals (two unassisted) as the Hawks beat Fort Vancouver 4-1.

• Christian Schicker, Washougal boys soccer, scored two unassisted goals to help the Panthers beat King’s Way Christian 5-2.

• Mitchell Pinney, Hockinson boys soccer, had two goals and three assists as the Hawks beat host W.F. West 6-1.
