Washougal High School hired a new associate principal this week to succeed longtime administrator Gordon Washburn, who plans to retire this spring.

On Monday, the district announced that Sheree Gomez will take over for Washburn on July 1. Gomez comes to the district with a multifaceted teaching background in special education, English, math, science, history and social studies.

From 2004 to 2013, Gomez worked at Skyview High School in Vancouver. She recently earned her national board certification, and she’s in the process of completing an administrative internship with Jason Lee Middle School in Vancouver.

About three weeks ago, Washburn announced his plans to retire by the end of the school year. Washburn has spent more than a quarter-century working for the district.

Washburn joined the district in 1988 to teach band at Washougal High and Jemtegaard Middle School. In 2001, he was promoted to associate principal at the high school.
