Community notebook: Evergreen girls lacrosse looking to clinch 2nd

The Evergreen Lacrosse Club will wrap up its regular season by hosting Graham-Kapowsin at 6 p.m. Thursday at McKenzie Stadium.

Evergreen, which has players from the Evergreen Public Schools high schools, is currently second in the Nisqually Conference of the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association. A win on Thursday clinches second place for ELC, which is 5-1 in league play and 8-3 overall.

ELC split a pair of non-conference matches last week, losing 12-8 to Holy Names then beating Gig Harbor for the first time in three years, 12-4.

In the win over Gig Harbor, Olivia Hood had five goals, two assists, fielded two ground balls, had three draw controls and caused two turnovers. Six players scored goals, with Alyssa Mehan and Madeline McKinnon supplying two apiece. Goalie Molly Johnson made seven saves and the defense forced nine Gig Harbor turnovers.

In the loss to Holy Names, Hood and Grace Davis each had two goals.

High school boys lacrosse

The race for the title in the Central-South Division of the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association is tight as the regular season enters the home stretch.

Camas (5-1) leads the division with Columbia River (4-1) and Union (5-2) each a half-game back in the standings. Here is a roundup of last week’s matches:

Columbia River 16, Camas 11 — On April 27, Brian Prigmore had five goals and three assists for Columbia River. Isaiah Pratt and Nick Ankeny also scored five goals apiece for River.

For Camas, Austin Garwood, Matt Thomas, Matt Welinski and Harrison Martin scored two goals apiece.

Union 11, Columbia River 7 — On April 29, Union handed Columbia River its first league loss of the season, holding CR to two goals through three quarters. Union was led by Andrew Harrah’s three goals and one assist. Trey Chambers added two goals and two assists, and Sam Rink and Payton Summers each scored twice. Union goalie Dominic Mendez had eight saves. For River, Pratt scored four goals and Mike Johnson three.

Over the weekend, Union (5-2, 10-3) added wins over Richland by a score of 9-6 and Southridge of Kennewick by a score of 16-2. In those games the top scorers for Union were Harrah and Parker Lindhorst with seven goals apiece.

Camas 13, Southridge 3 — On Friday, Aiden Garwood and Harrison Martin each scored three goals for Camas. Julian Svaricek won 11 faceoffs, Kannon Burchette fielded 10 ground balls and Martin, Austin Garwood and Bradley Stanchfield each had two assists.

Camas 12, Richland 8 — On Saturday, Matt Welinski and Harrison Martin scored two goals apiece for Camas. Goalie Jake Lambert made eight saves, Kannon Burchette won eight faceoffs and Matt Thomas fielded 10 ground balls.

Remaining games — Union finishes its regular season this week with games at Camas at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday and a non-league home match on Saturday against Aloha (Ore.). After hosting Union on Wednesday, Camas finishes with a May 12 home match against Columbia River. Columbia River visits Southridge on Friday and Richland on Saturday before finishing at Camas on May 12.

High school rugby

Reynolds 55, Battle Ground 15 — John McMahon, Tosh Young and Michael Boespflug produced second-half scoring runs in a loss to Reynolds on Saturday.

Other matches — Prairie defeated first-year team Summit of Bend, Ore., 34-14. William Prestwich, Brendan Day, Keagan Foster led the way according to Prairie coach John Fletcher. Prairie hosts Reynolds at 2 p.m.; May 9 at Laurin Middle School.

Union beat Lakeridge 40-5 on Saturday. No details were reported.

In the Club Championship Division, East Oregon beat the Clark County Warriors 31-15. No details were reported. Clark County plays a consolation state semifinal match at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Lents Park in Portland against North Clackamas.

Battle Ground girls — The Valley Panthers beat Battle Ground 34-5 on Saturday. No details were reported.

Climbing regional Saturday

The Source Climbing Center in Vancouver will host a USA Climbing regional competition from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Climbers ages 8 to 18 will attempt to climb three increasingly difficult routes without falling. To finishers advance to divisional competition in June at Bend, Ore., where they will have the opportunity to advance to nationals.
