Letter: What’s so good about oil deal?

I’m afraid I don’t quite get how our Port of Vancouver commissioners have concluded the biggest marine oil terminal is such a good financial deal for the folks of Clark County.

Here is who I see making big money on the deal. The oil drillers, the railroads, the marine transfer operation, the bulk vessel owners, the legal and political promoters, and the Chinese, who make money on burning the stuff and then send the waste back to us. Sure, we get a few jobs but it’s not like the state of Alaska, where residents get a percentage of every barrel shipped. In return for our very minor reimbursement, we get to live 24/7 with the risk of hazardous material running along our beloved river and through a city we have worked very hard to make beautiful and enjoyable for all its citizens. And this risk could be with us for the next 20 years.

I would like to see a better accounting, one I can understand and one that makes financial sense for those who bear the risk.
