The Mark Morris defense got two big stops in the second quarter, and that turned out to be the difference in a win over Woodland in a Class 2A Greater St. Helens League football game Thursday night.
The Beavers scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, but the rally fell short in a 27-21 Mark Morris victory.
Tristan Thomas’ 4-yard touchdown run with about three minutes left in the game put the Beavers within six points.
Mark Morris, though, would run out the clock with a couple of first downs.
Tyler Flanagan returned a fumble 87 yards for a Woodland score — the fumble was forced by a tackle from Hunter Raney — making it 21-14.
The Monarchs would respond with another score to go up two touchdowns.
Woodland coach Mark Greenleaf said the Monarchs had a goal-line stand in the second quarter, stopping the Beavers at the 1-yard line. The Beavers also lost the ball on downs in the red zone on another second-quarter possession.
Taylor Yeo caught a 28-yard TD pass from Wyatt Harsh in the first quarter for the Beavers.
Jared Cloud had 12 tackles and an interception for the Woodland defense. Thomas had 14 tackles.
