A Portland man wanted for allegedly setting a vehicle on fire in Vancouver in June 2014 made a first appearance Wednesday in Clark County Superior Court. Julio A. Montejo-Mex, 20, appeared on suspicion of second-degree arson in connection with the June 9, 2014, incident.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Vancouver police were dispatched to a fire shortly after 1 a.m. in the 7900 block of Northeast 12th Street. The vehicle, a 2000 Ford Mustang, was destroyed in the fire.

A witness said she saw Montejo-Mex and two other people walk up to the vehicle, and it appeared they poured something on it. She said she then saw Montejo-Mex ignite the car with a match or lighter, according to the affidavit. The suspects fled the scene to a parked vehicle near Northeast 82nd Avenue and 12th Street, the witness said.

Another witness said he saw the suspects flee in the vehicle northbound on 82nd Avenue, court records said.

During his hearing, Judge Suzan Clark appointed the Vancouver Defenders office to represent Montejo-Mex. She set his bail at $20,000.

Montejo-Mex is scheduled to be arraigned next week.
