The experience was all new to Brody Barnum, and the Skyview junior kind of likes it.

The junior quarterback, making his first start for Skyview, threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Storm to a 30-6 win over Walla Walla in a non-league game Friday at Kiggins Bowl.

“The best way to describe it was – I’m trying to find the right word – new, fresh,” Barnum said. “We’ve been hitting on each other for a couple of weeks, it was nice to get out and compete against someone else. We’ve been focusing on ourselves, we knew nothing about Walla Walla. We just went out there and played our game.”

Skyview’s game was supposed to be running the ball with senior Blake Ingram. But Walla Walla was determined to stop that plan.

Ingram had 19 yards on seven carries in the first half. So the Storm turned to Barnum.

The junior threw for 165 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, leading the Storm to a 16-6 lead.

“That was a heck of job by Barnum in his first varsity start,” Skyview coach Steve Kizer said. “He led the team the way you want to your quarterback to do.”

In the second half, the Storm got the ground attack going.

The Storm drove 70 yards after taking the second-half kickoff and extended the lead to 23-6 on an 11-yard run by Ingram. Ingram ran for 46 yards on that drive.

“We had to get bigger,” Kizer said. “Walla Walla did a great job stopping the run, so we had to go to a two tight end set. It’s nice that we have those big guys, because we haven’t always had them.”

Ingram finished with 126 yards on 21 carries.

“I think it was both confidence and adjustments,” Barnum said the second-half success on the ground. “We knew we could beat them up front, and we knew what they were trying to do to stop us. And Blake did a great job of picking up big runs.”

Barnum threw TD passes of 37 yards to Trevor Burns, 25 yards to Jeremiah Wright and 25 yards to Skyler Martin.

“I was kind of nervous at first, my first varsity start,” Barnum said. “But once we got going, the confidence started to build. It felt good. It feels really good to get this first win.”

Travis Yajko had four catches for 75 yards, and Martin had five catches for 72 yards for the Storm, who travel to play Woodinville next week.
